The 17th Avengers masterwork did not disappoint. Originally, published in the late 1970s, this collection had strong material from beginning to end with the exception of one obvious fill in issue. The book breaks down into three main sections. The opening three issue story arc is for my money the best of the three. Count Nefaria is the antagonist here, using Whirlwind, Power Man (the villain, of course, not Luke Cage), and the Living Laser, as his cannon fodder before he enters the battle. This was a well paced, action packed story. The Avengers have their hands full but eventually bring Nefaria down with a little help from Nefaria's own hubris. The second arc, played out in the two annuals (Avengers #7 and Two-in-One #2), is part of Jim Starlin's Thanos epic. This is, I think, the third time these two issues have been reprinted in the masterworks collections. Previously, it was reprinted in the Warlock and Captain Marvel series. No doubt, at least the Two-in-One annual will be reprinted again. The story is deservedly classic, bogged down only by the necessity of constant recaps. The third arc is the famous Korvac saga with a number of different sub-arcs with Ultron, the Collector, and others. It is my opinion that the resolution does not *quite* live up to the very effective build up. It's hard to properly review it without spoiling it completely but writer Jim Shooter had a great concept going with many philosophical and moral implications that got spoiled with what turned out to be pointless violence and a plot that has a few holes. But it's still a good read; no doubt it reads better over many months than a few days. The writing was generally first rate; Shooter knows how to juggle a large cast. The characterizations were well scripted and the plots well thought out. The artistic chores had John Byrne on the Nefaria story with George Perez, Sal Buscema, and Dave Wenzel on the Korvac saga. The book had the best in the business on it with Wenzel holding his own with his better known predecessors. The extras were first rate with original art, house ads, and the covers and epilogue pages from a 1991 trade paperback Korvac saga collection. The epilogue pages, four in total, try to hammer home Shooter's basic message, more or less effectively.Highly recommended. At about 350 pages this is outstanding value, especially the Kindle version which looks great on a tablet. Collection editor Cory Sedlmeier always delivers good value. The Korvak saga and a great Ultron story in one place. Awesome George Perez art. Guest Starring the original Guardians of the Galaxy.
